Press Release: Gwinnett Clean & Beautiful Awards 2018 Green Youth Advisory Council Scholarship to Kevin Chen

Gwinnett School of Math, Science and Technology Graduate Receives $1,000 Post-Secondary Scholarship from Local Eco-Focused Nonprofit

 

Lawrenceville, Ga. – June 22, 2018 – Kevin Chen – a graduate of the Gwinnett School of Math, Science and Technology – is the latest local student to be awarded the Green Youth Advisory Council (YAC) Scholarship from Gwinnett Clean & Beautiful (GCB). As members of the environmentally-focused nonprofit organization’s Green Youth Advisory Council, Chen and other senior council members were up for consideration for the $1,000 post-secondary scholarship. Beyond his demonstration of exceptional leadership and program development skills while on the council, what made Chen stand out most were the two years he had devoted to the YAC and his desire to pursue a career as either an environmental scientist, engineer or educator. Chen will begin attending Georgia State University in the Fall to pursue his undergraduate degree in either Environmental Science or Biology.

 

“Above all, Kevin is just an all-around great young man,” said Sumner Gann, Project Manager for Gwinnett Clean & Beautiful. “He exemplifies everything that we want our YAC members to represent – an obvious concern for the environment we all share and a willingness to get things done to make a difference. He was very active in leading the charge for a Food Waste Audit project earlier this year, and we have no doubt that he will go on to do great things in college and beyond.”

 

Keep America Beautiful (KAB), the nation’s iconic community improvement nonprofit organization for which GCB is proud to be an affiliate, designed a national model for the Youth Advisory Council (YAC) initiative to create a framework for youth engagement and environmental stewardship throughout the U.S. The Class of 2017-2018 represented GCB’s fourth Youth Advisory Council. During their time in the Council, GYAC members collaborated with other youth and government leaders to promote sustainability and civic engagement throughout the Gwinnett County community. At the beginning of the 2018-2019 school year, Gwinnett Clean & Beautiful will begin accepting applications and recommendations from Gwinnett County Public Schools high school students and administrators for its next Green Youth Advisory Council.
