MEDICAL NEEDLES
Place medical needles/syringes in a plastic container with a screw-on lide (juice bottles work well). When the container is full, fasten the lid and tape closed. Place the container in with your regular household garbage.
MEDICATIONS
Ask your pharmacy if it will take back expired drugs. Some pharmacies have programs to dispose of inventory they don't sell or offer take-back programs for used or expired medications. Costco pharmacies offer free disposal for their members. Be sure to check with the pharmacist to determine what can and cannot be thrown away.

Your unwanted medications may be disposed of in your trash. Follow these precautions to prevent accidental or intentional ingestion.

Modify the contents to discourage consumption.
Add a small amount of water to solid medications such as pills and capsules to at least partially dissolve them.
Solidify liquid medications by adding enough table salt, flour, charcoal, or cat litter.
Wrap blister packs or packages containing pills in multiple layers of opaque tape such as duct tape.

Seal and conceal.
Tape the medication container lid shut with packing or duct tape and put it inside a non-transparent bag or container such a brown paper bag or an empty margarine tub to ensure that the contents cannot be seen.

Discard the sealed container in your garbage can as close to your pick up day as possible.

MERCURY

PAINT

If the paint cannot be used up or given away, then read and follow the label for the manufacturer’s instructions on proper disposal. Under state law, solidified paint can be legally disposed of in a landfill. To solidify paint, mix it with an absorbent material such as cat litter, sawdust or shredded newspaper to absorb all liquids and allow the mixture to harden. Put the lid securely on the can. Place the can with the solidified paint in a trash bag and then "double" bag in another trash bag. It can then be placed in the landfill or placed out with household garbage for collection. Paint in aerosol cans (spray paint) can go directly in the trash.

PROPANE TANKS

Georgia Gas
(404) 364-4427
*accept tanks that they issued and that are in useable condition

TANK VALVES

As of April 1, 2002, new guidelines require that all propane gas cylinders have Overflow Protection Devices (OPD valve), a triangular-shaped handle with the letters "OPD."  There are also threads on the inside and outside of the valve; the old valves just have threads on the inside.

Tanks with no visible defects can be re-valved for an approximate cost of $20 by calling Gas, Inc. at 770.963.6238 (Monday-Friday 8 a.m. - 5 p.m.) or Amerigas at 770.945.9533. Tanks can be exchanged at most "re-fill and swap" locations.

If your tank is rusted, dented or otherwise damaged, you may recycle it with a company that accepts propane tanks for recycling ONLY if the tank is empty and the valve has been removed.

RAILROAD TIES

Citizens can contact a local landfill. Based on the quantity of ties they have for disposal they may be required to fill out a manifest form used to disposal and tracking of hazardous waste. Transfer stations will not accept railroad ties.

*will accept any amount of railroad ties

Richland Creek Landfill

*will only accept railroad ties if they are rotted and 20+ years old.

TELEVISION SETS

Best Buy stores will accept most consumer electronics, including televisions up to 32”. A $10 recycling fee per unit will be charged. (Consumers may bring up to two units, per household, per day. Console televisions cannot be accepted.)

Waste Management offers the Think Green From Home Electronics Recycling Kit for recycling small televisions.

You might also check with a TV repair places to see if they might be able to use it for parts. And, if it is still operational, you might consider donating it to the Salvation Army, Goodwill or American Family Foundation.

If not, your private trash collection company should pick up this item as part of your regular curbside trash service. Contact your company and they will schedule it for pick-up in another truck at no additional cost to you. Otherwise, you can take the television to one of the landfills located in Gwinnett County . There will be a disposal fee at the landfill.

VEHICLES

National Kidney Foundation of Georgia

*Must be legal owner of vehicle, have the title for vehicle. Vehicles accepted are cars, trucks, motorcycles, motorhomes, boats with trailers, buses and riding lawnmowers.

YARD WASTE
We encourage you to consider starting a home composting program for your yard waste. Composting is simply piling together the organic matter from your yard, and if you like, your home. The materials break down into a rich mulch that you can resuse in your yard. If composting is not for you, call your local garbage company for pick-up information or take your yard debris to a yardwaste landfill.
