Georgia Animals and Plants: Habitats and Adaptations (3rd-5th)
The Gwinnett Clean & Beautiful Habitat Toolkit focuses on Georgia animals and plants, their habitats, and adaptations that allow them to survive in those habitats. It is structured as a puppet show for Gr. 3-5 reading level. Characters include a penguin as Master of Ceremonies out of his habitat while here in Georgia and Georgia State Symbols: a right whale, gopher tortoise, green tree frog, opossum, tiger swallowtail butterfly, azalea, and largemouth bass. A map of Georgia regions is included and discussed briefly. Two scripts are included: one approximately 20-30 minutes, the other 45-60 minutes. Portions of the script can be deleted easily if desired to change timing or focus on specific organisms, habitats, or adaptations. A teacher resource page that includes links for background information, coloring pages, etc., plus information on making puppets is included on the website and in the kit.
Recycling & Waste Reduction Tool Kit (K-5th)
Loaded with fun facts, lesson plans, videos, and interesting items that have been reused or recycled. This kit is designed to foster an understanding of resource conservation and the importance of recycling. Items and lessons can be used to reinforce AKS objectives that address: healthy environments for the future, preparing to be productive citizens, respect for the environment and others and recognizing that raw materials can be changed by various processes.
WATER (QUALITY & POLLUTION)
Water Pollution – Nonpoint Source (K-HS)
We all live in a watershed, with water pollution coming from many sources. The Water Pollution Tool Kit shows pollution from nonpoint sources, such as: residential areas, deforested areas, recreation, agriculture, construction and storm drains. Pollution and run-off are visually apparent when rain carries soil (cocoa), chemicals (colored drink mixes) and oil (mixture) through a watershed to a pond, lake or river. This kit also shows water pollution prevention measures at work
Smog Soup Recipe
Smog is a word used to describe air pollution. It is difficult to understand how all of these work together to create smog, showing your students will help them understand how smog if formed. Smog is created from chemical reactions created by gases reacting with heat and sunlight as well as solid and liquid masses released into the air. Students learn the components that make up Smog by making a “Smog Soup”. This kit works well as a teacher demonstration or as a center-directed activity where students can read the “recipe cards” and add their own “ingredients” from the kit to make the soup. The recipe ends with students learning how to help reduce air pollution.
Tool Kits are delivered & returned via GCPS/School Courier Service
