Great American Cleanup Gwinnett Challenge Press Release

Gwinnett Clean & Beautiful Announce Great American Cleanup Gwinnett Challenge Winners

June 29, 2012 – Gwinnett Clean & Beautiful announces today the winners of the 2012 Great American Cleanup Gwinnett Challenge. More than 40 groups and organizations took part in this year’s challenge. Each group designed their own project in one of seven different categories in the hopes of becoming a 2012 Challenge Winner and earning a $500 cash prize.

One winner was selected from each category for making the biggest transformation and impact on their neighborhood and community.

The Green-up Your Neighborhood Award Winner, Brookwood Oaks Home Owner Association, gave 46 hours to improve their neighborhood. They cleaned 2 miles of roadway, collected 12 bags of recyclables and planted 20 trees and shrubs.

Mill Creek High School Key Club, the Stash the Trash Winner, removed litter and privet from Little Mulberry Park. Eighty- five volunteers donated 255 hours to make one of our county parks a cleaner and greener place for all to enjoy.

The Beautify Your Space Winner, the Lawrenceville Neighborhood Alliance, gathered 14 hard working volunteers to replace a rotten roof on an elderly neighbors’ house. These volunteers gave more than 180 hours of their time to turn an unsafe and unsightly eyesore into a home and neighborhood asset.

United Peachtree Corners Civic Association, the Put Litter in Place Winner, removed 44 bags of litter and debris from Peachtree Corners Circle, making Gwinnett’s newest city a cleaner, greener and safer place.

The Recycle Now Winner, Teacher’s As Leaders, collected more than 1,100 books to give to children being treated at Gwinnett Medical Center. Thanks to this project, the children receive a free book when they check out of the hospital.

Primerica, the Wipeout Graffiti Winner, painted more than 660 feet of fencing to remove old graffiti. Their efforts beautified a neighborhood entrance and will discourage future graffiti vandalism along Old Norcross Road.

The Grow Green Winner, Keller Williams Realty Atlanta Partners, built and planted 3 vegetable and flower gardens at Sheltering Arms. Children at this facility care for the gardens and are producing vegetables for use at the Daycare Center.

Connie Wiggins, the Gwinnett Clean & Beautiful Executive Director, believes that the Great American Cleanup Gwinnett Challenge creates tremendous opportunities for members of the community. Wiggins says, “This Challenge allows community groups to demonstrate their stewardship and pride in Gwinnett by working to make our community cleaner, safer and more livable.”

For more than 30 years, Gwinnett Clean & Beautiful has inspired the caretakers of our future by building strategic alliances. GCB works together with citizens, businesses, civic organizations and government to motivate everyone to roll up their sleeves and produce real results on the ground, where it counts.

This year’s results speak for themselves.  From March 15 – May 31, 2012, more than 15,000 people participated in 247 projects to make Gwinnett the greenest, cleanest and best community in America. Together they collected 1,018,291 pounds of recyclables; removed 80,741 pounds of litter, trash and debris; painted 5,280 feet (1 mile) of fencing; and cleaned up 195 miles of roadway.

“Thank you to this year’s winners and everyone that participated in the 2012 Great American Cleanup Gwinnett Challenge,” says Bartow Morgan, Gwinnett Clean & Beautiful Chair. “Your efforts show how much you care for our community. The difference you make every day ensures that Gwinnett is the best place to live, work, play and learn.”
