Press Release: Gwinnett Clean & Beautiful Conjures Up Some Christmas Magic with Largest Treecycling Event in Georgia

Environmentally-focused Nonprofit Invites Local Residents to Drop off Live Trees at Area Fire Stations

Gwinnett Clean & Beautiful -TreecyclingDuluth, December 17 – With the holidays rapidly approaching, many Gwinnett residents are bustling about town in hopes of finishing up their shopping lists, shipping their gifts to distant relatives and mailing that last fistful Christmas cards. At the same time, many local children can concentrate on nothing more than Christmas morning and the surprises they will receive from Santa Claus under their Christmas tree. It just so happens that the folks at Gwinnett Clean & Beautiful are keenly focused on those Christmas trees, too. Once the presents have been opened and the holiday table has been cleared, thoughts will undoubtedly turn to the task of taking down the decorations and preparing for the New Year. While artificial trees will be returned to their boxes until next year, the question persists: what happens to all of those live trees? Gwinnett Clean & Beautiful plans to conjure up a little Christmas magic of its own in order to breathe new life into those trees that would normally wind up by the curb and eventually in a landfill.

In preparation for the largest “treecycling” event in Georgia, Gwinnett Clean & Beautiful invites residents to drop off their live Christmas trees between December 26, 2014 and January 16, 2015 at the following local fire departments:

Before dropping off their live Christmas trees, residents should make sure they are free of decorations, lights and stands. Most of the trees collected will be transformed into mulch for use in landscaping projects throughout Gwinnett County – including local parks, roadway beautification initiatives and more. Some trees will be sunk into area lakes to serve as fish habitats, while others will be converted to fuel and other uses.

“One out of every five Christmas trees in Georgia is recycled right here in Gwinnett County,” explains Connie Wiggins, Executive Director for Gwinnett Clean & Beautiful. “That’s where the help of our residents is so vital. Rather than dragging their Christmas tree to the curb for the garbage company to pick up, why not drop it off at the local fire station so we can give their tree a second life? Not only is it a great thing to do for our community and planet at large, but it’s also a wonderful tradition to start with their family. We are so thrilled that this event just seems to grow and grow with each passing year as the word continues to spread. Of course, the success of our Christmas tree recycling program  would not be possible without the enduring support from wonderful sponsors and advocates like the Gwinnett County Fire Department, Gwinnett County Board of Commissioners, Gwinnett County Department of Transportation, Georgia Power, Jackson EMC and Republic Services.”
